Epoxy Flooring for Breweries & Wineries in BC

BC's craft beverage industry demands floors that handle thermal shock, acidic spills, heavy equipment, and constant washdowns. Here's why epoxy is the industry standard.

British Columbia's craft beverage industry is booming — over 300 craft breweries and 400+ wineries operate across the province. Every one of them needs flooring that can handle the unique demands of beverage production: constant moisture, acidic spills, thermal shock, heavy equipment, and aggressive cleaning protocols.

Why Breweries and Wineries Need Specialized Floors

Beverage production environments are among the most demanding for flooring:

Constant moisture — Floors are wet 80% of the time from washdowns, spills, and condensation

Acidic exposure — Beer (pH 3.5-4.5), wine (pH 2.8-3.8), and cleaning acids attack unprotected concrete

Thermal shock — Hot CIP (Clean-in-Place) water at 80°C followed by cold rinse creates rapid temperature cycling

Heavy rolling loads — Forklifts, pallet jacks, and full kegs (160+ kg each) create point loads

Chemical exposure — Caustic cleaners, peracetic acid, and sanitizers used daily

Slip hazard — Wet, soapy floors with workers carrying heavy loads

The Right System for Beverage Production

Not all epoxy systems work in breweries. The correct specification includes:

Moisture-mitigating primer: Brewery floors are constantly wet. A moisture-tolerant epoxy primer bonds even to damp concrete and prevents osmotic blistering.

Chemical-resistant body coat: A novolac epoxy or vinyl ester body coat provides resistance to the full pH range (acids from product, alkalis from cleaners).

Anti-slip topcoat: Polyaspartic with aluminum oxide broadcast provides grip even when floors are wet and soapy.

Integral cove base: 6-inch radius cove at all wall-floor transitions eliminates bacterial harbours and makes washdowns effective.

Slope to drain: Proper slope (1-2%) ensures water flows to drains rather than pooling.

Thermal Shock Resistance

Standard epoxy can crack under thermal shock — the rapid temperature change from hot CIP water hitting a cold floor. Our brewery-spec systems use flexible epoxy formulations that accommodate thermal expansion without cracking or delaminating.

We specify systems rated for thermal shock cycling from -20°C to +80°C — covering everything from walk-in cooler floors to hot-side brewing areas.

BC Brewery Projects

We've worked with craft breweries and production facilities across the Lower Mainland. Our brewery installations typically include:

Taproom floors (decorative flake or metallic for customer-facing areas)

Production floors (chemical-resistant with anti-slip)

Cold storage floors (moisture-tolerant, thermal shock rated)

Loading dock areas (heavy-duty with impact resistance)

Installation Around Production Schedules

We understand that shutting down production costs money. Our brewery installations are planned around your brewing schedule:

We can work in phases (taproom first, then production)

Weekend and overnight installations available

Typical brewery floor: 5-7 days depending on size and complexity

Return to light traffic in 24 hours, full production in 72 hours

Investment and ROI

A properly specified brewery floor costs $10-$15 per square foot installed. Compared to the cost of a failed floor (production downtime, re-installation, potential contamination), it's the most cost-effective long-term investment.

Many BC breweries have tried cheaper alternatives — sealed concrete, painted floors, or standard epoxy — only to replace them within 2-3 years. Our brewery-spec systems are warrantied for 15+ years in production environments.
